oBril Cream contains several active ingredients that work together to help lighten hyperpigmented skin. Melanogenisis is the biochemical pathway by which the skin pigment melanin is produced by melanocytes, specific cells located at the base of the epidermis (upper skin layer). Once formed, melanin is transferred via melanosomes to the keratinocytes where it provides protection against harmful effects of UV irradiation from the sun. Production of melanin is dependent on the action of a key enzyme, tyrosinase and an additional enzyme, tyrosinase-related protein-1 (TRP1), which helps modulate tyrosinase activity. Several skin lightening agents target the tyrosine enzyme specific to melanocytes. 4-n-Butyl Resorcinol in oBril Cream has been shown to be a potent tyrosinase inhibitor and blocks the production of melanin in melanocytes by blocking the action of tyrosine as well as inhibiting TRP13. Niacinamide (also known as nicotinamide) is the water soluble active form of vitamin B3 and is a precursor for co-enzymes that facilitate enzymatic reactions for several metabolic pathways that are important for maintaining healthy skin. It also demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting inflammatory cytokines4, 5. Studies have demonstrated that topical niacinamide helps improve the appearance of aging skin and reduces hyperpigmentation; it is also an effective treatment for acne and other skin conditions4, 5.
Curcumin is an active component of turmeric (Curcuma longa), a root that has long been used as a natural anti-inflammatory in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) is a colourless major metabolite of curcumin, which is distinctively yellow in colour. THC has been reported to have antioxidant and anti-aging properties and is more stable than curcumin. It has been shown to be more a potent antioxidant free radicle scavenger than curcumin but lacks anti-inflammatory activity6. It has also been suggested that THC is a useful as a topical depigmenting agent and acts as a skin lightener by inhibiting tyrosine kinase activity7.
Terowhite is a natural pterostilbene extracted from the dried heartwood of Pterocarpus marsupium. Pterostilbene is a potent antioxidant that is also found in grapes and blueberries and is structurally similar to resveratrol, a compound found in red wine with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic properties8. As a cosmeceutical agent, Terowhite is thought to provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory (anti-aging) support, which helps with protection from the damaging effects of exposure to UV radition from the sun. It is also thought to induce skin lightening by inhibition of tyrosine activity in melanocytes. This action of Terowhite supports dyschromia management (alteration of skin colour, such as hyperpigmentation, especially in darker skin types) (product information)9.
Potassium Azeloyl Glycinate is a soluble form of azaleic acid, a common ingredient in treatments for acne and skin lightening, and works by inhibiting tyrosinase activity and reducing sebum secretion10. However, due to its poor solubility azaleic acid requires a high dose to be effective and this can cause irritation to sensitive skin. Potassium Azeloyl Glycinate is effective in lower concentrations and is better tolerated11.
Daisy flower (Bellis Perennis) has long been used in traditional medicine to treat skin disorders. Extract of Bellis Perennis contains several active compounds and has been shown to influence melanogenisis at several stages. Polyphenols inhibit the activity of tyrosinase and also tyrosinase production. Extract of Bellis Perennis is thought to have skin lightening properties by contributing to the reduction of melanin formation as well as reducing the proliferation of melanocytes thereby, blocking melanogenisis, and inhibiting the transfer of melanin containing melanosomes to keratinocytes (skin cells)12. it also acts as an antioxidant due to the presence of flavonoids13.
All these active ingredients in oBril Cream contribute to its effectiveness in lightening skin in various conditions where hyperpigmentation is the result of a skin condition or skin damage, particularly in darker skin types, restoring a more natural colour to the skin.
